Parkinson's

Parkinson's disease research is testing whether ketone metabolism can influence mitochondrial stress, neuroinflammation, and non-motor symptoms. The signal is interesting, but not yet definitive.

Scientific rationale

  • Ketones may influence mitochondrial efficiency, oxidative stress, inflammation, and neuronal signalling relevant to Parkinsonian biology.
  • Diet also changes weight, gut function, protein timing, and medication absorption, which can all matter in Parkinson's care.

Research snapshot

  • Small randomized and feasibility studies have compared ketogenic approaches with other diets and reported signals in non-motor symptoms or metabolic measures.
  • Current evidence is too small and short to establish disease modification or broad clinical recommendations.

Clinical frame

  • Constipation, frailty, unintentional weight loss, orthostatic symptoms, and levodopa timing make supervision especially important.
  • Dietary changes should be coordinated with the treating neurology team.

Open questions

  • Are reported non-motor improvements driven by ketosis, weight change, glycaemic change, microbiome effects, or placebo/context effects?
  • Can longer trials measure motor progression, cognition, sleep, autonomic symptoms, and tolerability together?
